Description
Amtrak’s Southwest Chief runs along the former Santa Fe mainline from Chicago to Los Angeles. During the train’s trip, it passes through the famed Raton Pass and Glorieta Pass.
In this video, we begin right on the station platform in La Junta, Colorado. We follow the train along BNSF’s Raton Sub to Trinidad, where the climb begins up the 3% grade of Raton Pass.
After departing Raton, the train reaches 79 mph, and passes through the last semaphore signals on class 1 rails. The high speeds don’t last long, as the 3.5% Glorieta Pass lurks ahead, with many more semaphores standing.
We made trips to the line over a 9-year period, showcasing the changes brought to the line. Join us as we watch modern passenger service pass through Santa Fe relics!
