Iron Horse to the Rodeo

About the video

Cheyenne Frontier Days is now known as “the Daddy of ‘em All,” but when the event started in 1897, that wasn’t the case. As the event grew, Union Pacific started running special trains to the rodeo, and though the train has been off-and-on throughout history, it had run every year since its comeback in 1992. The train in 2018 would be the last Frontier Days run for the foreseeable future.

In 2018, UP 844 did the honors of pulling the train, along with the newest specialty diesel, UP 1943, the Spirit of the Union Pacific veteran’s unit. We start the day in Denver, CO, and catch 5 runbys of the train before its arrival in Cheyenne, WY. After their arrival and dropping off the passengers, we follow the train out to Speer, where it will turn on the wye before returning to the depot.

While waiting for the 5:00 PM departure, we stayed right there in Cheyenne to document UP and BNSF’s freight movements before following the train back to Denver. See stacks, merchandise, meets, and a surprise appearance from SD70ACe #8444!

Join us for a fun-filled day that’s known in the area as “the railfan event of the summer!”
